| Originally built in 1955 by the famous Belfast based Harland and Wolff shipyard, she was constructed under order from Port Line who were part of the Cunard Group, to operate as the refrigerated cargo passenger ship Port Melbourne, for a regular liner service between Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In 1985 Danae was purchased by Costa who transferred ownership in 1990 to Prestige Cruises. In 1996, the vessel was acquired by her present owners and following a refurbishment by Arcalia Shipping/Classic International Cruises, she was christened Princess Danae. Since her launch in the winter of 1996/97 Princess Danae has established a programme of cruises to the Caribbean and South America in the winter months before positioning to the Mediterranean and Northern Europe in the summer. Under her present ownership Princess Danae has developed an enviable reputation among the international market establishing a strong presence in the French and British markets and becoming a firm favourite with seasoned cruise travellers and first timers alike. |
