| Allein die zahlreichen Landschafts- und Klimazonen sind atemberaubend. Das weite Spektrum umfasst die Koralleninseln des Great Barrier Reef, des größten Korallenriffs der Erde, und die regengeschwängerten Urwälder im tropischen Nordosten ebenso wie das Outback mit seinen Savannenebenen und steinübersäten Einöden, wo es Viehfarmen von der Ausdehnung deutscher Bundesländer gibt und wo heute noch unvorsichtige Reisende in sonnenverglühten Halbwüsten ums Leben kommen. Im Süden findet man vielgestaltige Küstenstriche mit bizarren Klippen, im tropischen Norden Bilderbuchstrände. Inselartig über den ganzen Kontinent und die im Südosten vorgelagerte Insel Tasmanien verstreut sind hier einige der gewaltigsten Urlandschaften unserer Erde. Kein anderer Monolith kann sich mit dem geheimnisumwitterten Ayers Rock messen, der sich aus einer trostlosen Ebene im heißen roten Wüstenherzen von Australien erhebt. All dies macht Australien zu einem Spektakel der Schöpfung, reich an Farben und Kontrasten, an Formen und Phänomenen. |
