Der 4.300 km lange Pazifikanrainer Chile überklettert in Nord-Süd-Richtung 38 Breitengrade. Umgedreht und als Messschablone an Norwegens Küste angelegt, reichte das Riesenlineal bis in die Sahara hinein und wiederholte dabei sogar die ihm eigenen (ant)arktischen, mediterranen und wüstenhaften Großklimazonen. Zwei von Norden nach Süden verlaufende Gebirgsketten rahmen das im Durchschnitt nur 180 km breite Land ein. Der von Vulkanen gekrönte Andenhauptkamm, im Mittel 5.000-6.000 m hoch, bildet, langsam absteigend, den größten Teil der insgesamt 4.000 km langen Grenze zu Argentinien. Längs des Pazifik erstreckt sich die kaum halb so hohe Küstenkordillere, deren südliches Drittel im Meer untertaucht und einen zerrissenen Archipel von Fjorden und 5.580 meist unbewohnten Inseln bildet. Zwischen den beiden Hauptgebirgssträngen eingebettet, breiten sich im Norden der 4.000 m hohe Altiplano und die von Salaren durchzogene Hochwüste aus, in Querrichtung mehrfach durchschnitten von den Kastentälern der Flüsse. Einige von ihnen versiegen allerdings schon auf dem Weg zum Pazifik.  Chile
