Auf der Liste der Reiseziele mitteleuropäischer Urlauber steht Spanien ganz oben. Sonne, Sand und Meer sind die wichtigsten Devisenbringer des Landes auf der meerumspülten Iberischen Halbinsel, die sich als fast quadratischer Landblock zwischen Mittelmeer und Atlantik schiebt. Die Atlantikküsten des sogenannten »grünen Spanien« im Norden, vom Baskenland bis nach Galicien, und der andalusischen Costa de la Luz (Lichtküste) bringen es auf gut 1.500 km Länge, die Mittelmeerküste Spaniens zwischen der französischen Grenze und Tarifa ist knapp 1.700 km lang. Eine Sonderrolle spielte schon immer das Land Katalonien, aufgrund seiner Geschichte wie der eigenen Sprache, des Catalá, das in Dialektvarianten auch auf den Balearen und im Land Valencia gesprochen wird. Im Mittelalter war Barcelona das Zentrum eines mediterranen Großreichs, das die Balearen und zeitweise auch Korsika, Sardinien, Sizilien sowie das Königreich Neapel beherrschte. Nach seiner Integration in das spanische Königreich litt Katalonien unter dem ländlich-rückständigen Adel Kastiliens, der die politischen und ökonomischen Geschickte des Landes über Jahrhunderte lenkte, während die geschäftstüchtigen Katalanen nach vorn strebten - eine uralte Konkurrenz, die bis heute spürbar ist. Der Reichtum, den die katalanische Kaufmannschaft erwarb, zeigt sich noch in den prachtvollen Stadtpalästen Barcelonas.  Spanien
