| In Vietnam findet man noch die Faszination des »alten Asien«. Nicht Verkehrsstaus, Hochhäuser, Reklameschilder und hektische Betriebsamkeit bestimmen hier das Bild, sondern durch Reisfelder watende Wasserbüffel, beschauliches Dorfleben und die Geruhsamkeit einer Gesellschaft, die im Kern immer noch agrarisch geprägt ist. Ursache für diese »romantische Rückständigkeit« ist das bis heute traurigste Kapitel der Landesgeschichte: der Vietnam-Krieg.
Das Erbe von fast 30 Jahren Krieg gegen Franzosen und Amerikaner, zehn Jahren sozialistischer Planwirtschaft und 20 Jahren amerikanischem Wirtschaftsembargo kommt wenig spektakulär daher. Ökonomisch gehört Vietnam immer noch zu den Schlusslichtern in Asien. Wie seit Jahrtausenden bestimmt der jährliche Zyklus der Reisernte den Lebensrhythmus eines Großteils der Bevölkerung. Doch gerade jene traditionelle, bäuerliche Verwurzelung macht den Charme des Landes aus. |
